I can't imagine I'm the only one who sometimes feel they have become static in life. Doing the same thing over and over on auto pilot. I have recently hit one of those "walls" life introduces you to periodically, as to say, hey are you really living life to the fullest? I have been here before as I'm sure most people have, but I think I am going to approach this one differently. I actually think I'm going to change my life. Just a little. I think submerging yourself into something different from time to time is good for the soul. Many times I have felt like this, I'll think about why I'm unhappy then just as easily as the feeling of complacency comes I quickly get swept back into the same routine without changing anything.
I have posted a few things about Parkour on this site before, but until recently I haven't truly experienced the feeling of having no limitations on the path in front of me, you can take that as life or just simply running. A few days ago I had quite a surreal experience and the following day felt like I had to go for a short run. That short run, which normally takes me on a 2.88 mile set path, ended up taking me into the city and the heart of downtown. While running down the wide, populated sidewalks of the city, I was soon jumping over benches and hopping on ledges to avoid the pedestrians. I began thriving on the strange looks I got as I hurdled over three foot chalk boards advertising restaurants specials which scattered the downtown area.
Now this might not be a life changing activity to most people, but for me it is a way to leave my brain at my car and just GO, and for these times of spiritual complacency doing something out of the ordinary is a good way to stop dwelling on things and give your mind a chance to just forget about everything for awhile. I think it is hard for most people, including myself, to see anything else other than the obvious path in front you. In my background as a Biologist, I have learned that the brain does a lot of editing you don't realize is going on. There is such a large amount of information your senses send to your brain, you would go crazy if it didn't filter some things out. You can end up missing some truly amazing things if you aren't looking for it. It is an evolutionary advantage to process information quickly and make a snap judgment in order to escape danger or hunt for a meal. However in our relatively safe and prosperous society there is more room to slow down and just live in the current moment.
If you have read this post then I will ask you to do one last thing (I know reading this post was rough) and that is, when you wake up tomorrow, go through that entire day without thinking about tomorrow. Just live one day as if there wasn't a day to follow. I don't mean go to Vegas and spend all your money on blow and dog fights, I mean spend time with that person who is a good friend but you keep telling them you don't have time to hang out. Then turn your phone off and go buy yourself that inexpensive luxury (everybody has one) but never remembers to do. Mine is buying socks, there is nothing like a brand new pair of socks. Keep you phone off the rest of the day and just enjoy it by yourself.
