Wanna be a B-boy or B-girl?
Why is a break dancing video in here you ask? Break dancing is for New Yorkers and black people, Right? Well that may be half true, but if you are looking for an alternate way to channel your fitness and artistic needs, learning to master some of these moves can also carry over into other aspects of your life.
If you have spent any time in the crossfit culture you will notice that compete fitness is the credo of its teachings. My own body has responded much better to the use of bodyweight and functional movements than in years of 'traditional' weight/cardio training. Take the handstand for example. Most people can do a handstand in a few minutes, with a few attempts, if they are leaning against a wall, with a spotter. Imagine the fitness required to do a handstand unassisted and also to be able to hold it. It can take months to develop that ability, but once you have that little skill in your bag of tricks why not use it.
If you know anything about parkour, then you see the handstand quite often as a useful way it clear an obstacle if coupled with a flip. A walking handstand will engage muscles you might not be use to using, leading to increased core and stabilizer muscles.
Even if you think breakdancing isn't for you, at least incorporate some of the maneuvers in your stretching, warm-up, workout, or in my case drunk dancing ( do not get drunk and breakdance fight - everyone looses except for the guy filming your dumb ass)
Practice everyday until you can hold yourself up.
Im pretty big into fitness and nutrition, and having been out of commission for 9 months has made me appreciate how lucky I am to know the joys of being active and testing my body. I want to share my passion and experiences with anyone who enjoys pushing the limits of their body and mind or wants to but doesn't know how to start working out safely. I'll be using this page to post informational and inspiring videos and links to knowledgeable diet and exercise web sites. Please feel free to throw in your two cents. . . . Everyone says brown rice is better for you but does anyone know why? Maybe this will help you make up your mind next time you are on the fence about which to choose. BROWN RICE VS WHITE RICE - VIDEO . . . Everyone listens to different music to hype them up, so here is one that for some reason gets me in a rhythm for running. My White Friends (Gainesvillains Remix) . . . PARKOUR If you have heard of Parkour before and thought those guys are genetic freaks....well most of them are but they also had to learn the skills required for most of the crazy maneuvers they perform. And as they say practice makes perfect, so if you're interested in starting out I would recommend getting the basics down before hitting the urban jungle. This linked video might help if you want to start with the basics like balance and judging your jumps. mov . . . FRAN- A CROSSFIT STAPLE To give you an idea of one of the bread and butter workouts crossfit incorporates I've linked a video of a workout called Fran. Girl name I know but she's a bitch. For a trained athlete it takes anywhere from 3 to 8 minutes depending on specific weaknesses. The workout just seems kinda easy on paper but its a different story when you are competing against someone for time. These lifts are dangerous if you are not trained in olympic lifting so I would urge caution for anyone attempting it. These type of workouts are much more common in gyms specific to the crossfit lifestyle. Many personal trainers mock the workouts or claim they are dangerous, which if you don't know what you're doing they can be, but if you get into this type of fitness program you will forever have a new respect for what true fitness is. Crossfit doesn't just train the body but also the mind. Workouts are performed in groups which adds an element of competition, and at the same time encouragement to the equation which your typical gym can not offer. mov
